MarkItDone — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 10 July 2026

MarkItDone converts PDF and Word documents into clean Markdown. Privacy is a core feature of the product, not an afterthought. This policy explains exactly what happens to your data — in plain language.

The short version

What we process, and where

1. Free conversions — on your device only

Text-based PDFs and Word (.docx) files are converted to Markdown inside your browser. The file content is never transmitted to us or anyone else. It never touches a server, regardless of whether you're on the free tier or Pro.

2. Server OCR (scanned PDFs, Pro only) — transient storage, never persisted

Scanned PDFs have no selectable text and require a Pro subscription to convert. The file is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection directly to a private, temporary storage location, then read by our OCR function:

3. AI-OCR (Pro) — a third party reads the page images

The premium AI-OCR engine produces higher-quality results on messy or scanned documents. On this path, page images are forwarded from our function to Anthropic (the provider of the Claude AI model) to extract the text. This means a third party processes your page images on this path only.

If you handle confidential documents and prefer that nothing ever leaves your machine, use the free on-device conversion (text PDFs and Word files) — Pro OCR is opt-in and only runs on the specific file you choose to upload.

Payments

Subscriptions are handled by Gumroad, our payment provider and merchant of record. When you subscribe, Gumroad collects and stores your email and billing details under their privacy policy (gumroad.com/privacy). We never see or store your full payment details.

To link your subscription to your installation, the extension generates a random identifier (a UUID — not your name, email, or anything personal) and stores, on our side, only that random identifier, your subscription status (active / cancelled / expired), the subscription's ID, and the license key used to re-verify it. No document content and no personal data are stored on our servers.

What's stored on your device

The extension uses local browser storage (the storage permission) to keep your display preference (side panel vs. popup), the random installation identifier described above, and a license key only if you chose to enter one manually. This stays on your device and is removed if you uninstall the extension.

Permissions we request

We request no host permissions and never read or modify the pages you visit.

What we do NOT do
