MarkItDone — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 July 2026
MarkItDone converts PDF and Word documents into clean Markdown. Privacy is a core feature of the product, not an afterthought. This policy explains exactly what happens to your data — in plain language.
The short version
- Free conversions never leave your browser, period. Text PDFs and Word files are converted entirely on your device — nothing is uploaded.
- Scanned PDFs require Pro and are processed on our server: uploaded temporarily, OCR'd, and deleted within seconds — never written to a permanent disk or database.
- We don't track you. No analytics, no advertising, no selling of data, no device fingerprinting.
What we process, and where
1. Free conversions — on your device only
Text-based PDFs and Word (.docx) files are converted to Markdown
inside your browser. The file content is never transmitted
to us or anyone else. It never touches a server, regardless of whether you're on the free
tier or Pro.
2. Server OCR (scanned PDFs, Pro only) — transient storage, never persisted
Scanned PDFs have no selectable text and require a Pro subscription to convert. The file is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection directly to a private, temporary storage location, then read by our OCR function:
- The upload is deleted immediately after processing — typically within seconds. An automatic 24-hour deletion rule on the storage location is a backstop for the rare case where that immediate deletion doesn't run, not the primary path.
- Page images rendered from the file exist only in memory during OCR.
- Nothing is written to a permanent disk or database. We do not keep copies, logs of your content, or backups of your files.
3. AI-OCR (Pro) — a third party reads the page images
The premium AI-OCR engine produces higher-quality results on messy or scanned documents. On this path, page images are forwarded from our function to Anthropic (the provider of the Claude AI model) to extract the text. This means a third party processes your page images on this path only.
- We disclose this plainly rather than burying it.
- We do not store the images or the results.
- The free, on-device conversion path never involves any third-party AI and never leaves your device.
If you handle confidential documents and prefer that nothing ever leaves your machine, use the free on-device conversion (text PDFs and Word files) — Pro OCR is opt-in and only runs on the specific file you choose to upload.
Payments
Subscriptions are handled by Gumroad, our payment provider and merchant of record. When you subscribe, Gumroad collects and stores your email and billing details under their privacy policy (gumroad.com/privacy). We never see or store your full payment details.
To link your subscription to your installation, the extension generates a random identifier (a UUID — not your name, email, or anything personal) and stores, on our side, only that random identifier, your subscription status (active / cancelled / expired), the subscription's ID, and the license key used to re-verify it. No document content and no personal data are stored on our servers.
What's stored on your device
The extension uses local browser storage (the storage permission) to keep
your display preference (side panel vs. popup), the random installation identifier
described above, and a license key only if you chose to enter one manually. This stays on
your device and is removed if you uninstall the extension.
Permissions we request
- storage — to save the small settings above.
- sidePanel — to show the side-panel view.
We request no host permissions and never read or modify the pages you visit.
What we do NOT do
- We do not run analytics or telemetry.
- We do not show ads.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone for marketing.
- We do not fingerprint your device.
Data retention
- Document content: not retained — deleted immediately after processing (temporary storage has an automatic 24-hour deletion backstop; page images used for OCR exist only in memory).
- Subscription record (random ID + status): retained while your subscription is active and for a reasonable period afterward for billing/support; removed on request.
Your rights
You can stop all data processing at any time by uninstalling the extension. For any request — including deletion of your subscription record — contact us at the email below.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and the version published with the extension.
